Bass Rig issues
I have a Peavey Nitrobass head with a 2X10, 4 OHM cab, and a 15", 4 OHM cab. It should put me up to 450 watts. I'm having trouble getting my volume up to where it needs to be, with the tone I like. It seems that the speaker protection kicks on just before I can adjust to where I want to be. When I tune it all in to turn it up, the sound sucks. When I turn it down with the right sound, I'm drowned out. I'm looking to add some effects to it to help (because I just dropped 񘈨.00 on the rig, and don't want to get new cabs already). I thought compression, a 24 band EQ,
? Any suggestions out there from someone with a similar problem?
Thanks for the input. I got it all set up at 450 watts. the problem is that it still isn't loud enough. I've added a compression pedal, which has helped tremendously, but I still could push a little more air. I'm cranked to ten on the main volume, and the drive sets about 7. I'm punchng through better, but I am losing a little of the bottom end that I need to do some tweaking to get back. if I'd just go for 1000 watts, i'd probably be happy! What did you add to your head to beef up the output???
with 2 4ohm cabs, you should set the head @ 2ohms which should give you the 450w you need.
i,ve gone through all of these woes with most conventional bass amps even you high dollar amps which were fine bass rigs(SWR,Ampeg,Peavy, etc.) but even with these bass amps the power out put was not enough for what i wanted in bass rig. So.I did what I,ve should have done in the 1st place I bought a real good Yamaha power amp,a DI box ,a alembic pre-amp that I got off of E-bay and a good deal on dbx compressor.Every person of who I met that place bass hears my rig are shocked to hear how clean it is and what I explain to them is that with my pwr amp I have all the headroom in the world with it.I mean,I have 2000 watts of clean power @ 4-ohm load when bridged,in stereo conversion 1000W @ 2 ohms. You get the picture ! the only cabinet i use is a SWR Goliath 4x10 cabinet. the really good thing about all of this is that you could and proably would spend less on his type of bass rig than doing a ton of modifications that may or may not give you the power that you like to have short of,placing a mike in front of your cabinet.
Actually you may have enough power just not enough air moving. Let me explain, the face of the speakers are pushing air to create the sound. Now a fifteen moves more air then a two ten cab, but a four ten cab mores more air then a 15 and a 2X10, you add up the face values of the speakers, it is weird but that is part of the reason why guys love the 8x10 cabs, I run a 4X10 and getting ready to get another one. I did have a Mesa 6X10 that was very loud but it did not drop bottom like I wanted it to, it was tuned to like 48hrz, I like cabs tuned to at least 36 hrz currenlty I am using 30 hrz cabs 28 is the lowest I have seen. Anyway you may want to try 4x10 with the either of the other two cabs that you have, or to be even better buy the 4X10 run it and the 2X10 cab full rangeoff of your Peavey, then buy a power amp, some where in the 250 watts range and run it into the cross over section of your Peavey and cross it over to the low end I would say the E and B string and let the power amp power the 15. This is called bi-amp and it is the best. Also setting your EQ to push 800 freg. range you will be able to cut through the guitars better. OR you can try this sorry I have a lot of ideas about this topic. go to SAMASH.com and buy the MXR M-80 it will make your rig sound 3X bigger I love this pedal, I keep it seperate from all of my other pedals it rules. Samash has it on sale right it is about 30 bucks cheaper with them right now. Not sure how long it will be on sale. 450 watts is not alot, but it is damn good, the formula to use to find out of you have enough power is three times the power of your guitarist, I have never played with a guitarist running more then 150 watts. Now drummers, those damn drummers. ANyway I hope this helps you
SERIOUSLY GET THE MXR M-80 IT WOULD BE THE CHEAPEST ROUTE AND SAMASH HAS 45 DAY RETURN THEN TRY MORE COSTLY ROUTES
Use your head as a pre/power amp and add a medium sized independant power amp. Crest, Crown, Ampeg, Mackie; take your pick, they should all do the job of giving you more head room. Just my two cents.
wow this is SO 3 years ago

hey bongo, that sooo could have been me doing all of that. i just got lucky enough to get here after you.
Well at 4 ohms the nitrobass is only going to 300 W
I understand your problem, though i have a Firebass that i am going to upgrade to Max w/ DPC 1400W to really crank out some power.
