Favorite strings
Well I got to thinkin'......
I know a lot of you all are from out in the sticks and have a bit of a drive to get yourself bass equipment- including strings. Give me some feedback as to what kind of strings you guys (and gals) dig and maybe I'll order up some if I can get a consensus- sell em' here so you can have them mailed to ya! Just a thought.....
I have tried elixers...that coating comes off to quick and becomes very annoying...plus don't bass strings cost enough?!?!?!
On my Soundgear, I've tried a wide variety of strings, partly because I'm relativly new on Bass, partly because I really DO live out in the sticks (or at least you'd think so by string selection) Everything is pretty expensive here in Alaska, but for economy and tone, I like to play GHS Bass Boomers, Med. Light. I've got a super low action, and they're not too 'clacky.'
I figured it was about time to resurrect the ol' string debate - especially as I am considering changing to a thicker gauge ;)
My Musicman still has it's original 'Regular' Slinky roundwound strings. What difference(s) will I notice if I changed to 'Power' Slinky roundwound strings?
55-75-90-110
Also, roundwound or flatwound? As a fingers player, I kinda like the feel of the roundwound strings. Plus I slap and pop a lot which I guess should influence my choice of string.
Ideally, I'd like to try as many different strings as possible but it's just not practical.
I dig those strings as well- although I prefer the LOW RIDERS for the Music Man- the Hi-Beams are just a bit too bright on that bass, but they sound great on my Jazz Bass!
I would have to say that I like the bright-ness of the Hi beams. I tried the low riders and i just got lost in the muff..hehehe. Anyway, Havent tried the fat beams yet, but they are next on my list. I just put some hi's on my new tobias, and yummy yummy, i feel it in my tummy.
I like Elixers. They feel like there's mayonaisse on the strings.

Good point tunes. I guess I just like being a high roller. I also play Danelectro Vintage Tone short scales on my Longhorn.
Mike
Mike how do you like your longhorn?![]()
I have never liked the look of them, but do they play well???
I use D'Addario XL Super Soft Gauge which is basically a 4-sting set and any type of B-string conventional or tapered on my music man stingray v
Thanks for the info Mike!!!
The DR Fatbeams are the best strings I think I've ever used!! I have them on all of my basses and they sound great on all of them! Plus if you want a custom guage set, DR will make you just about anything!
Hah! Yer talkin' 'bowt my neck o' the woods now bwoy.
I us'ally jus' string 'er up with bailin' twine, but when I run out of that....
DR Marcus Miller signatures or DR Hi-beams are most excellent my good man!
I love Dean Markley Blue Steels and Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky.
I used to love it. When I first bought it, that's all I used for about a year. I used it with several rock bands I was in. I liked it for playing on stage. It was a real head turner. That and my Ashbory. But then I started slapping and it didn't sound good on the Longhorn, plus the strings are too close together. I hadn't played it for a while and when I went back to playing it I noticed the intonation was all screwed up on it. I sold the Ashbory a little while back, and I'm thinking of getting rid of the Longhorn once it's up to par. I'm sticking with the traditional long scale bass from now on.
Mike
hey, you guys with the High Beams, How do they compare with d'addario Prisms? If you say the DR's are too bright, I'd probably love'em. I love the tone of the Prisms but they're just too abrasive. feels like I'm playing 80-grit strings
I like the sound of the D'adarrio XL 170's, but I'd I'd lose the sound of the D and the G when popping. Another bass player hooked me up to the Ken Smiths when I asked how he got such a fat sound out of the P-Bass he was on. I've been on those ever since. I probably could've just used a heavier gauge with the D'As, but I think I'm straight for now.
Dean Marley Nickel Steel strings
dean markleys r nice
AWESOME! A 3 year jump in posts!
I'll go with the DR Highbeams.
DR high beams 50-110
AWESOME! A 3 year jump in posts!
haha second time i did it
D'addario 120's.
I play with Rotosound BS66. I love them. Nice deep punchy tone
I wish I could get the D'addario 'Slow wounds' again, Nice and soft, even tone, nice highs and tight bottom, I've got to settle for the Pro-steels now and Flats from same Co. I guess the Infields stuff may be next as I've tried almost everything else.
I figured it was about time to resurrect the ol' string debate -
Said a guy in 02. 3 years later the thread is only two pages deep.
I have still yet to try the Low Beams, but I agree the Hi's are a bit bright.
I'm currently using DR Marcus Miller "Fat Beams" and they're just amazing. Can't see myself switching anytime soon, although I hear many many good things about Thomastik-Infields.
yup, this is the end of the post.
