Does your bass have a name?
Just wondered how many people actually have given names to their basses. I have a guitar named Edgar (NOT named after Edgar Winter!) and a bass named Hamish. I'm about to order a new bass from France, and I think I'll name him Pepe le Pew.
What do you call yours?
May not be the greatest name, but ..
I bought my first bass on my younger brother's birthday, and his middle name is Reuben, so....
"Man down Dude...."
Mariscos, how is your new bass???
Is it everything you dreamed???
i just started sing the song and i was like hmm hmm hmm hmm hmmm people eater... just one of those random spouts of inspiration.

Plays ok, but I know I'll outgrow it for a better quality bass in the next 6 months to year.
Yup, that's about how long it took me to outgrow my first bass. I have ordered my dream bass, but it is going to be some time before I have it in my hot little hands. I thought it would take me longer to notice the shortcomings of my cheap p-bass knock-off, but I took it as a good sign that I was really learning something about playing the bass. I'm not all that attached to my old bass, and have considered turning him into a coffee table or something, but then I have these silly guilt feelings about thwarting his purpose as a musical instrument. Is there a bass psychic out there who can tell me what Hamish would want? It's sort of like trying to decide what to with a loved one's remains.
I call my 60's Epiphone hollow body hank, and i call my bc rich mockingbird the freak
My Tobias is named "ToFu" and my ibanez that I have had forever is "Izabella". What can I say, these are the only ladies that let me slap their bottom and tug on their g-strings...and they are easier to turn on anyway.
My wife named my Jazz "Roxy", after an old girlfriend that I tend to talk about a little too often I think. Think she's jealous? She shouldn't be, I love them both equally.
Sometimes when I'm holding my fender jazz bass and listen to primus songs over and over again I call it "dammitwhycan'tyousoundlikethat!?". But hey it's all I got. And being 16 without a job I don't think I'll be able to afford one any time soon, so its all I got. :'(
Does anyone think it is important to name your bass. I do!!! I think it is essential!!! Don't ask me why, it just makes things better all around.
Good one!
i named my washburn amber. am i the only one who name all of it intruments a gurls name??
I've got the classic Bessy. She's an Ibanez. Then Slim is a Longhorn.
Mike
Slade - I will never get rid of Esse. I just will need a bass I can do gigs with. I have learned a lot on it so far and I couldn't just ditch it.
mariscos - I would say also to keep your first bass for fun and old times sake. The first may not play the best or look the best, but it's still the first. So many things it's taught us as we've used it.
Okay folks, I need some feedback. I'm thinking of naming my new, purple Vigier bass (a male) "Precious Baby Lamb" after a vicious Siamese cat my grandma used to own. That cat was so mean, the vet offered to put it to sleep free of charge. My thinking is that it takes a real manly bass to carry off a name like that.
Any reactions to my idea?
I call mine "bread winner"

Peavey Cirrus bass
Ain't it a great bass!!!!
I call my upright "baby". I talk to her all the time. She only talks back when I want her to.
My first bass was a no name old jacked up bass lent to me from a friend so I could learn. All it had on it was a Tony the Tiger sticker, hence "The Tony the Tiger Special". My new bass does not have a new name yet, but I'm thinking,,,
Question: Is it appropriate to re-name a bass that was purchased used? What if it already HAD a name?
After 3 years, I still don't have a name for my bass.
I think you can rename it. I renamed my cat, for goodness sake, and she adjusted to the change.
Maybe you could do a little christening ceremony. Good excuse to have a little bubbly!
I guess I should change my bass's name to Ricky RattleFretsEvenWithSaddlesAlltheWayUp!
Or maybe I'll just buy a better bass.
my main axe is called "the BEAST" cuz well, its a beast
I got a frettless i call astro-glide cuz its so slick.
My upright which has been passed down from my granddad to my pops to me was named Gwendelen by my grandad- its pretty cool- metal body and neck and at least 65 years old. Haven't named my new amp yet, but I have the feeling it's going to be called MOTHER F***KER!!!! when i try squeeze the sub cab into my car again.
Mariscos~~you said your new dream bass was from France, what kind of bass is it? Brand, style, etc. . . Will you be sending out pictures of it?
what about naming it people eater?
Hey all! I'm new here and on a bass. I call mine "Esse". Kinda dull name, but when I get a better bass I will pick a better name. I have an Essex bass. Plays ok, but I know I'll outgrow it for a better quality bass in the next 6 months to year.
I just bought a new bass. She will get here on Friday and i don't know what to name her.
She's a Peavey Accelerator 6, metalic Purple, w/ white turtle shell pickguard.
Any suggestions?
Well, black is my favorite color (hence the name Deep Black C), and my 5 string Ibanez is black, so I gave it the name "Shadow". It just about follows me wherever I go, too!
Great Topic,
My Purple P-bass is called "You Suck". Though sometimes I think I should change his name to Bo. because no matter how many neckjobs I get I can shoot arrows with it.
Mariscos: "Precious Baby Lamb" ?? Hmmm....
Great story behind it. Not sure on the name though.
My Soundgear is kind of cranky, the thin neck is always getting out of sorts. I'm thinking.... Crankshaft or Oscar (as in Oscar the grouch).
I'm always on edge with my instruments. So i try not to get too close.
so the thought of naming them has never popped into my mind.
They are just tools to me, i have no personal attachment to them.
Hey PEET... loved your video!
I'm working on gettin' you up on the site right now. Should happen real soon now. You are one Ugly SOB! (that's the highest form of compliment).
I call whichever bass I am using, "the Weapon" ![]()
I named my border collie Cirrus after my Peavey Cirrus bass. I pretty much just call her "sheep dog" and my bass "My Bass". ####, I need to go to creativity school.

#### skippy it is!!!!
Sadly, Hamish is a bit light in the body, and therefore lacks adequate "sustain" to get me to the "Oh Dear God Yes!" stage. I'm hoping Pepe will be better able to "go the distance."
Strangely, I've never considered naming my basses but if I did it'd probably be called 'Tone' ;)
I think it's bad luck to not name your bass. My Jackson 5-string is "Gorgeous". it's also the nickname a gave a girl a long time ago and still have for her today.
My G&L is named Manny
My Fender is named Barney Rumble
My Italia is named Chloe

How about incorporating the old name with your new- ex) Frettless Freddy (old name) the freaky five-string- or somethin' like that.... I don't know about the cat though for God's sake... cats are confused easily enough!!!
Okay, I just finally actually ordered my new dream bass from France. I was thinking of naming him Pepe Le Pew or Froggy, but I thought I would invite suggestions from you lot. Bear in mind, my bass is definitely a male! It will be a purple 4-string Vigier Custom Passion.
Any ideas?
Well, I've ordered it, but it won't actually be in my hands for another 7 or 8 weeks!
But I will definitely be posting to brag about it when it does come.
Go to this link to vote on a name for my bass!

Oh.... show that bass some love... it's your first one and you'll never forget it- and you should NEVER get rid of it (this is the only difference between ones first bass and ones first love!!!)
How about Lila, short for Lilac?
I'm considering naming my Musicman Stingray 'Chi' and my Musicman Stingray 5 'Cheng' after Chi Cheng of the Deftones. First problem is, Cheng plays Fender basses. Second is Cheng is my joint favourite bass player with Flea and I don't have another bass to call 'Flea'. Mmm...
I call my Black fender jazz "Tinkus" and his sidekick amp "stopbuzzingdammit"
My '76 Jazz is called "Ash". I've had it for about 15 years. It's my best friend.
I named my Ibenez "Link" 'cause I can't find the right tones 'cause a tone knob is broke. My Rouge is named Axe...Go figure
I am really glad someone asked this question.. I name ALL of my basses.. My favorite is my 5 string Yamaha.. His name is Froggiemotto... He even made me let him put up a couple pages on my bands web site.. Some nerve of him.. LOL
