My lastest studio effort
On Sunday my band, Beyond the Nile, started tracking the first song for what will eventually become our demo. This band is mostly a rock/improv band and we're all studying music in college. We tracked all the guitars by going into the head and running the line out into a protools setup. My bass (the modulus Q6) was tracked the same way. The drums were recorded with a mic on the picalo snare, a second on the regular snare/hats, third for bass drum and a fourth overhead. We did three takes and picked the one we liked better. Since all the fills and solos are completley improv each take had a very different feel even though we stayed on the same progression. All the vocals were recorded afterwards. Last night we were in the studio for a few hours setting the eq and levels on all the tracks. The mp3 can be found here. I layed back on this one pretty hard. The next track will either be a funk slap song I wrote or another one with extensive bass soloing and fills.
+1 TJ............
i think the vocals are great in spots, but not as great in others (higher notes for example and held out notes).
the rest of the band is kickin for sure
it has kind of an allman bros vibe to me (what i'm listening to in the truck today). but still unique.
Same thing here. Get the vocals straightened out, (I like the singers voice) and you have a hit on the Dave Mathews radio network I've listened to it three times, I love what you have going on there. Nice Work!

Great tune man, looking forward to hearing more as you get it done.
Thanks a lot for the honesty - you guys are right on. The singer is the guy who got the musicians together (about a year ago now), owns the protools setup, is a music production/technology major and gets us free studio time. In addition to that he wrote this song. It's good you guys liked his voice at some points - he's been working real hard and we're going to keep these tracks so that we can redo the vocals at some point.
+1 for everything said. The background vocals need to come down in the mix. Other than that it sounds good. I really like the song. Reverb on the vocals would help. Is he mastering the tracks himself? If not, then he doesnt need to put reverb on the whole mix. If he is, then adding a little reverb will pull the mix together more and clean the harshness up alittle. I would recommend sending the tracks of to someone to have them mastered. It will cost some money, but it will be done well and will make it sound like you guys spent $15,000 a song on it. Just trying to be constructive so don't lynch me. ![]()
Dude, I finally got to listen to the tune, been at work and I can't really jam any music a an audible level. I love the music and 90% of the vocals. Man to be a jam band, you guys really do que off each other very, VERY WELL! Can't wait to hear more!!
I really dig the song as well, but as most have said, the vocals need work. They have a lot of potential, and it works great in some partd, but others, they dont cut it. Great music though.
Peace

Yep, vocal treatments and you're good. Nice stuff Q!
i liked the music itself but im just being honest here ok? just some constructive criticisim...
the vocals need to be redone. the keys, twang were really good. and the drum mix sounds really good. but the vocals are a little harsh.. maybe some reverb? >more<
one thing though if the vocals were recorded afterwards, it can be really difficult to get your volume right singing to a prerecorded track.
other than that its a really good homebrew recording... its always tougher than it seems and the hours that you put in for one good mix are enough to rattle your brain.. keep it up man!
Yeah her voice is kind of deep but, She loves to be spanked, she always wears a g-string and when we do \it\ she lets me hold her by the neck!
