"Project Ibanez" porn porn porn inside!
Well, I finally started to rework my Ibanez TR 4-String.
I bought it from a pawn shop when I first had an interest in playing. It came stock as red, and I spray painted it black. Even put a few stickers on it. Time for that all to go! Everyday that I work on it, I will add a new list of things done, along with a pic of the work so far by the listed date. I will appriciate everyone's input! Thanks for looking :)
At the bottom of the post I will put a small preview pic of it's current condition.
Here's the plan..
- Strip all the paint (lot of sanding)
- sand it smooth
- either just clearcoat it, or stain it
- eventually update the electronics
Here's what I've done so far..
3/14/06: Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3 Pic 4
- (semi)complete dissassembly
- sanded the paint off the headstock, only need to smooth it a bit more, and stain/clearcoat it once I decide on what I'm doing
- started sanding the body, using a dremel no less, got some nasty grooves in there that will be hell to get out.. who knows, it might just add to the character of the finished product
- put it back together, had to play it and snap some porn for all of you
- Dissassembly, left electronics in, just moved them around as I needed to get around them
- Paint stripper, paint stripper, paint stripper.. It only took off the spraypaint, and was just starting on the clear above the factory red after 5 or so applications.
- While waiting on the paint stripper to work all those times, I sanded the headstock with some fairly fine sandpaper to get it really smooth
- Michelle and I (yes she helped), sanded away on what was left with 60 grit sandpaper using some good ol elbow grease
- Put it all back together, to play it for a few, and take today's progress pics

step AWAY from the Dremel :D
the headstock came out great.
however i would stop sanding and use a stripper of some sort to chemically remove the paint. after each application has had a chance to work, scrape it off with a razor blade or spackle knife. after that the sanding is easy. i'd say you could save the bass, although the body will be thinner on the half you used the dremel.
hmm, sounds like a plan.. Don't know why I never thought of using paint stripper.. lol.. Will have to pick some up as soon as possible, to remove the rest of the paint, then go from there :)
I actually like the way it looks now, I know I'm kinda wierd like that, but whatever, it reminds of my mexijazz once I was done with it.
but yeah, stay away for the dremel, not a good idea :p

Great idea Jackie. Why sand when you can have some nekid lady do it?

lol!
Okay, I paid a visit to walmart today. I picked up a thing of stripper, a resperator, and some assorted sandpaper from rought to very fine.. should end up nice in the end :) I plan on starting the stripping tonight, just need to disassemble it again.. while it is stripping I think I will finish up the headstock with the fine grain sandpaper.
Lunari
plan on at least 2 weeks of daily stripper application (wow that would be FUN) and scraping before youa re ready to rough sand and smooth out the dremel mess. also have a shop vac handy to suck up the paint scrapings...

That's alot of stripping! lol :)
Luney,
At least you've got the jugs to have at a proj like this.
Personally I'd borrow someone else's stick and use it for my first project bass :p

It's almost done too ;) and looking pretty nice if I do say so myself :) Should be done either tonight or tomorrow ;) I'm going to hold off on posting any porn of it until it's done.
???WTF???
Did you do ANY research on guitar refinishing? You sand as sparingly as possible AS NOT TO CHANGE THE BODY CONTOURS!! I hate to say it but at this point you have made a ton more work for yourself and quite honestly if I was trying to save that bass at this point I would finish removing the paint with Aircraft stripper and put a coat of body filler on there and HAND sand the shape back into it, then paint it with a solid color and hope to God no one ever saw those pics again.
Yikes!
I'm only busting your balls cuz I've done stupid stuff like that, even recently. In the future take your time and research what you are doing first.
