1984 and Animal Farm are two of my favorites! If you like, as I do, the dystopian society kind of books, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World is good. I didn't like it as much as 1984, though.
Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five is excellent. I read it years ago and some of the characters still stick in my mind (Roland Weary is one).
Ray Bradbury's Farenheight 451 is something you might like. Dystopian kind of stuff. Ends kind of weird.
Salinger's Catcher in the Rye didn't do it for me but some folks love it. To each his own.
If you want some heavy duty reading and have a LOT of time on your hands try some Ayn Rand. Anthem is the shortest but not the most impressive. Fountainhead is long but worth it and it's very accessible. I'd start with that before I moved on to Atlas Shrugged. Atlas Shrugged is extraordinarily long and a chore to get through but the story she tells is worth it. You, being a bassist and, by default, a creative person, will certainly resonate with the main characters in Fountainhead or Atlas.
Hope that helps!
I'll read anything by Christopher Moore. My favorite two so far are:
Lamb --The gospel of Biff, Christ's childhood buddy. (Very funny and not offensive unless you take your religion WAAAAY too seriously).
Dirty Job -- An average Beta Male discovers one day that he's death... Well, he's A death (not THE death) and has to learn on the fly, how to be a grim reaper without destroying the world... Also amazingly funny!
If youre looking for something lighter, go for Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
I'm only halfway done, but I love it so far.
I read the First of the H2G2... It was neat. The movie sucked thought.
As far as the rest... I have no Idea of any of those authors exept for tom clancy, and to be quite honest, I hate Clancy's guts. Soooo repetitive.
I'd recommend Hemingway's The old man and the Sea. A bit short, but I loved it.
Also, Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose Is extremeley adviceable.
read 'the Kite Runner'; simply one of the most powerful and emotional books i have read.
Aren't we supposed to be stupid or something? :p
Catch-22
East Bay Grease
Brave New World (You'd like that one for sure.)
Might I suggest The Alphabet of Manliness by Maddox from thebestdamnpageintheunniverse. Super funny and offensive, a must read.
I read a lot of military sci-fi. If you like that genre, I would recommend David Weber and the Honor Harrington series. Great reads.

My favorite author is Poppy Z. Brite you should look her up her stuff is kinda different but I like it
The Green Mile or The Shawshank Redemption.(Steven King)
Or try The Power of One, and Tandia by Bryce Courtney.

Meh... It's chuckle inducing... Kind of like my spelling. but exremeley overrated, just like Borat...

!
That book was read by a majority of serial killers. Gotta love that teenage angst. As one who has a degree in literature, I'd recommend any classic. Epics are the shizz and my favorite is Paradise Lost, but Beowulf was by far the best warrior. He'd kick Odessius's ass. Dante's Inferno is a great book, but get a translated version (they have some that water down the complex verse structure). It's a great reference book for wicked verses for songs etc. The imagery of hell alone is bad ass. They're all classics for a reason. If you're reading for a class and you want something short and entertaining, go for Of Mice & Men. Best 106 page book I've read. My favorite book is Robinson Crusoe.
if you want some light reading, i would suggest anything by douglas adams (the guy who wrote h2g2) or terry pratchett.
Resurecting this thread to reccomend Apathy and other small victories by Paul Neilan.
funniest.book.ever.
+1 to Fahrenheight 451. One of my favorites. Sometime, I'd like to read one of Neil Peart's books.
I just finished Dave Bidini's book ON A COLD ROAD...Dave is the same age as me and its fun to read about a past I can relate to.
David Bidini, rhythm guitarist with the Rheostatics, knows all too well what the life of a rock band in Canada involves: storied arenas one tour and bars wallpapered with photos of forgotten bands the next. Zit-speckled fans begging for a guitar pick and angry drunks chucking twenty-sixers and pint glasses. Opulent tour buses riding through apocalyptic snowstorms and cramped vans that reek of dope and beer. Brilliant performances and heart-sinking break-ups.Bidini has played all across the
I just finished re-reading Twenty-Something by Iain Hollingshead. For anyone in (or ever has been) in that category will.... WILL love it. I've never read a book and literally laughed out loud like that. I got a lot of strange looks when I was reading it on an airplane several weeks ago. The author is a Brit, so the language is a bit taxing for any American that's never seen Snatch, Lock Stock, Shaun of the dead, ect. But definately worth the time.
Also, a great contemporary read is Lunar Park by Brent Easton Ellis (the author of American Phsyco(sp?)).
Bro with that kind of a list you need to read A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. Preferably the UK version with the extra last chapter.
You may also dig American Gods by Neil Gaiman.

Anything by Chuck Palahniuk (author of Fight Club.) I think my favorites were Choke, Lullaby, and Survivor. Haunted has it's outrageous moments as well.
I'm currently reading Les Calypool's book. Not sure if I would recommend that yet.
