Hair tie dampening system...

Ive been analyising my bass lines, and Ive noticed that most of my playing resides mid-range... I only play open strings when I'm following the guitar on chorus/verse.

any tips on hair tie/scrunchies/sweat bands? I have long hair but none of my ties will do the job without holding down the G or B string. size? brand? type?

5 string bass btw.

I use the elastic ones that are sorta like a mini mini tube top. They do the job for me, btw the ones with the metal binding at the back suck really hard for muting.

elastic thin ones, theyre really nice to have on a fretless, and cool on a fretted if your going to be tapping

yes, delicious tapping...

so I should go thin? not those big puffy ones?

thin, the big puffy ones get in the way and also distract form the beautiful handwork that comes with tapping lol

I use small, wide one hair tie...

Use the kind that are made of an elastic fabric, not the kind that are a rubber-band covered in a fabric.

Mine got stretched out and wasn't working to well, so I pinched the back and safety pinned it so it stays nice and tight.

I use the thinner type no poofiness. This girl actually showed me a way of tying it so that you can adjust how much tension it will put on the strings. I will have to show you sometime.

I have a wrist sweatband thing, that I sewed a pleat into to make it tight, you can pull it just past the nut to damped the open strings if you want them to sound a bit when you play a high bit or pull it all the way to totally kill them.

i use a sock, tied around the neck. This way i can control how muted the strings are.

It works way better than any scrunchie style thing i've used. Plus, i've become known as 'the sock bassist', which is pretty funny.

YOU SOCK!

:D

Wooten uses a scrunchie type that will park behind the nut when he's not using it.
