Ok, so a few month back (i'm too lazy right now to look) someone asked if we knew anything about Ocean basses..... and well, I couldn't find natta squatta on line about them... so... yesterday before my show...5StrgWpn (think thats his new screen name; used to be deadfall my old roomate and current tech/best friend) swing by GC to pick up some new strings for my 5 wire as my DRs had been on for about 4 months, and I didn't have any time to boil them...and walking around the store... we see Ocean basses... and i remembered someone asking about them.... so here is a little review...

backstory: Made by Cort in Indonesia exclusively for Guitar Center

Construction: Neckthrough 5 piece maple/walnut neck

electronics: Bartolini MK-1 soap bars with active/passive toggle switch, 9 volt battery copartment, on board 3 band pre amp/eq... don't know what kind... might have been bart... but didn't bet to pop the back off

body: solid maple natural finish (the ones we played)two piece body, neck shwing through.

Hardware: Hipshot ultralight machines and bridge in brushed nickel.

Money: MSRP $1199.... retail.... $799... could proly haggle GC down to 700 out the door w/ a hsc...

So.... I was EXTREMELY impressed with these basses. Very playable, even with little to no set up as is common with GC. Great electronics, very easy to dial in the sound/tone you were looking for. Felt great, very well balanced. The neck was a tung oil/natural finish.. and was super smooth... it was a little on the Jazz neck shape side of things... very comfy to play.

So if any of you guys are thinking of getting into a mid level neck through with some great electronics... this would be a excellent place to start.

Anybody else have any encounters with them?
