"Bass" speakers....
Because I have no clue, and there seems to be a lot of smart folks on this here bass forum I thought I would ask a (probably dumb) question. What is the actual difference between a bass speaker cab. and a twang speaker cab? Are the speakers actually different or what? This is not important info that I gotta have right now, I was just wondering and I figure someone here will know.
thanks.
There is also a heavier cone to handle the lower frequencies.
bass speaker cabs are ported to enhance the lower frequency response of the unit
also bass speakers are designed for more travel by the cone because they do so at lower frequencies they are also built stronger for that same reason
I've played through twang cabs and they sound okay, there's just not much throw, in other words, the signal doesn't reach far at low frequencies because the cab is designed to enhance higher frequencies
Many many things! in fact, the only similarities is that they both have speakers. In boxes! Heh.
Firstly the speakers themselves, as already pointed out are thicker and have larger magnets, to make sure that those lows are ready to put out. However Just as importantly is how the box itself is voiced. This is what really makes cabs stand apart tonally. For example Eden cabs are tuned to have a low mid bump in the frequncies. Some people like it, some people dont. Its very easy to bung a speaker in a box and say viola! but to design a box that is going to perform evenly over the sonic spectrum is a different matter all together!
Its less important with guitar cabinets as they are not having to work as hard throwing the noise. The high frequencies will travel quite a distance undisturbed, Unfortunatly this is not the case for our bowel rumbling 60Hz!
This is also why Bill Fitzmaurice and Schroeder cabs seem to cut through live mixes so well. They are voiced so that the frequencies that cut through a live mix are more prominent. This is simply prooving the importance of the cab as both manufacturers use readily available commercial speakers!
Hope that helps!
I knew it had to be something!! See this is good info here. Now I have no plans on building a speaker cabinet or anything, but at least now I know a bit more about why a bass cab works better for bass. I knew some of you would have good info.....thanks guys.
Bass cabs tend to be heavier too since bass players tend to have stronger hands and can hold them easier than a twanger could. Thus twanger cabs tend to be lighter...

I knew that had to have something to do with it, but I didn't want to be the one to say!!!!!!! lol.....

well im not smart but i think the magnets are bigger for one.
