Active Duty and Vets
So the work thread got me thinking. Just curious (and yes, we've probably done this before) who on the forum were active duty and veterans.
I did about 6 years in the Navy. Got out as an E5. It was a love hate relationship. They loved me, I hated them. :D Just kidding. It wasn't all bad.
The most significant part of my time in was being one of the decommissioning crew for the USS Missouri. She's currently pier-side at Pearl Harbor next to the Arizona Memorial.
Here's what a bad mamma jamma she was. (I didn't shoot the video or post it, but I was onboard when this was shot.)
Come on now. I know it's not just BP and myself. Where are you other vets and actives at?
Ink Collector, you have a built in excuse. I'm sure it can be difficult to get to a computer sometimes. Stay safe over there, man. The world needs good uglies like you.
Active Duty Air Force... 11 years now.
spent two deployments in Afghanistan in the last 4 years.

been to Korea, Italy, all over europe.

U.S. Navy, 1969-1972. Spent mostly in Newfoundland and Bermuda as an Ocean Sound Research Technician.
Just retired from the Navy 6 months ago. It was fun.
US Navy. Nuclear Field Electrician. Fast Attack sub duty, SSN752 Columbus...here's some pics of her:

Fun. When we do this, you can slide down the deck of the engine room like it was a slide. ANd if you are in the cone, you feel weightless as the boat levels out.

Being on the sail is amazing. The whitewater on the sides is 15' tall.
Got out in '94 as an E-5. It's a different life, gald I did it...recommend it for others, but glad it's over.
I saw the Mighty Mo' way back when it was a tourist attraction at the Bremerton Naval Shipyard in the early 80s. I was a kid and it was a way cool experience. After that, she was built back up and sent to the Persian Gulf for Gulf War I. Following that final action, she was then sent to Hawaii to resume life as a tourist attraction once again.
I couldn't even imagine what it would have been like to stand on deck with those 16-inchers firing!
I'll be off to basic training in a few weeks, kinda nervous about it though

Don't be. Just find out as much as you can before you go. Basic does suck. But the important thing to remember is that you will be there to get 'trained' on military life. You will learn a bunch of stuff in a small amount of time. But in the end it is rewarding and you are achieving a goal. Kinda like climbing a mountain. You will push yourself in possibly new ways, but that's a good thing.

I was on active duty for three years @ fort bragg NC. Including an 8 month rotation to afgahnistan. Had some good times there, mostly at the strip clubs hehe. Full-time duty isn't really my thing though. Too much bs and politics.
All you have to do to be original is to actually have the balls to be yourself. Let it come out and it will come out differently. It is not hard to be original; it is fear that keeps us from being original. ~Oteil Burbridge
