VoiP ????
I am thinking about transfering to VOIP phone service
do you have it and how do you like it?
i had digital phone thru the cable company. sound was fine...
you just most likely won't have service in a power outage
i just recently switched to verizon (normal non digital) home phone service. no real difference in clarity, imho.
I think it's overpriced. I have not had a home phone for 10 years.
It got replaced by a cellphone. (yeah, even more overpriced)
ok, so being in telecom here are my two cents.....
Voice Over Internet Protocol is what the future of phone service will be.... here is the problem with residential VoIP service...
IP technology utilizes packet transfer technology to send and receive data, and the packets travel the path of least resistance through the internet cloud.
With residential VoIP service, you are running VOICE packets over a DSL/Cable/or other consumer grade service... These consumer grade services do not have QoS (Quality of Service) which gives voice traffic the priority over data/internet. Unlike failed packet delivery when you are surfing the web, you will get an error and reload the page and everything will be fine, with voice... if there is packet delivery failure, you lose the call, you also hear jitter and latency (if there is an issue).
I am not slamming it, I sell it..... I am just pointing out the issues that can be had. From a commercial standpoint (my area), VoIP has been out for a long time and is still getting tweaked every time I turn around. The difference between commercial VoIP and Residential VoIP is basically QoS. The routers involved to provide QoS can get pretty pricey and its not cost effective to put complex QoS routers in everyone's homes just yet.....
so there..... thats my two cents..... take it for what its worth.

here within the next ten years that is what it will all be. Most business are switching to it right now.
