Picked up the new Lamb of God album, Wrath, the other day. AWESOME stuff! Songs are really well written and extremely tight, and I have to say that this is quite possibly the best SOUNDING album I've ever heard. Whoever did the recording and mixing did a fantastic job.
My favorite part (go figure ) is the bass tone. I want whatever rig they recorded the ugly with, with all the tone knobs glued in place with two-ton epoxy! The bass parts themselves? Exactly what they need to be. Totally rock solid with the drummer. Speaking of, the drumming is as impressive as ever. Just great stuff all around.
Any other LoG fans out there have any thoughts?
I kinda have to respectfully disagree with you there in this not being a great album. I personally think it's some of their best work to date!
I agree about the rawness of the production, though. I happened to do some reading on their site and some other interviews about it. From what I gathered, they wanted to capture a more live sound, and I think that ended up getting pulled off quite well!
When we're ready to start going around interviewing studios, I'm going to bring this CD with me as an example of the kind of sound I'd like to hear. It's really funny how albums start sounding like crap the more they get over produced. I don't know why more bands don't take a more simple approach to recording.
Wrath is just metal goodness :D
I kinda like Palaces better though
mjeh, did not like it very much.. but im sic of there sound at the moment.. so perhaps in a few months i'll appreciate it..
I was kinda meh on the new LOG but the new Mastodon is the best thing I've heard in the last couple of years. Loads of classic rock and 70's Prog elements mixed in with the heavy stuff.
Stunning...
They're streaming the whole album on their myspace page but I don't think that will last long. Get in and check it out while you can. This thing is brilliant.
I'm a definate LoG fan and I love the fact that you can actually hear the bass on this album. It was present in other albums but mainly in the background. I love the fact that they even gave him a mini bass fill during one song (I forget which one, only listened to the album twice thus far).
I like the rawness of the production on Wrath. It's not a great album by any means but it's still a solid piece of work. One of the things I love about Lamb of God is their consistancy. They try new things here and there but they don't try to reinvent the wheel, they stay true to their sound and their success over the years is proof that.
If I remember correctly, John Campbell (their ugly) uses his own Jackson style bass and a Mesa Rig. I'll have to look up the details at a later time.
All you have to do to be original is to actually have the balls to be yourself. Let it come out and it will come out differently. It is not hard to be original; it is fear that keeps us from being original. ~Oteil Burbridge
