0 to Callus...How long?
So I started playing around with a couple songs for the new tribute band. I am REALLY going to enjoy playing the ugly stick on these songs (Nirvana).
But I have come across a problem. I have twanger callus', and they are definitely not the same spots that I need for playing bass. I can play bass for about 20 min before I am close to hamburgler-ing my fingers.

I am also finding that there are sounds I want to make with the bass, but I just have to figure out how to do it. That will just take time on the stick.
So, my question is this...as long as I practice every day, but stop before I do damage to my fretting hand...
About how long does it take to build callus' for playing Bass? Or at least, how long did it take for you?
Excellent. I'll be sure to not push it to blister level. Thanks!
Hmm. If you're playing Nirvana, perhaps you could get an approximate tone with a set of less-harsh on the fingers strings? Half-flats, flats, coated, etc. I don't recall them having a particularly bright tone.
I found finger calluses to work for both instruments. Lucky me.
I recently picked up a cheap acoustic twang for camping. Like any good camping guitar, the action is way high. This one will probably lead to more calluses than I can handle.
Oh yeah, welcome to Uglyville!
I've got to get you down here to play your jazz through my Shuttle rig. Maybe after I get back from Oregon.
Not a bad idea on the flats. But I need to man up either way.
2 weeks, you should have some decent callusses by then. They'll only get harder and tougher as time goes on.;)
put super glue on your fingertips... let it dry and harden before you touch the strings or you could have serious bad juju happening. also dont touch your junk with super glue wet fingers, or anyone elses junk for that matter. unless thats your thing you sick sick little man... knock yourself out kojack.
rock.

I used methylated spirits to harden up the tips - only used superglue when the calluses dropped off

I ran out of super glue on the last double dutch windmill. Still have not heard from that guy.:D
I had the same problem earlier this year. Getting back to seriously playing after a long break from not playing at all. I had to push through the pain, after a few weeks I was finding my fingertips were back to where I needed them to be.
I didn't play anything but an accoustic twang stick occasionally the whole time I was playing in the sand, so mine were gone for the most part. After I bought that stick from Headle, I've been playing at least 2-3 hours a day, and they're slowly coming back. The way I play, I'm getting callouses on my first and third fingers more than the second. The pinky is pretty much useless to me for right now, but I've never used it much anyway.
Well, from fresh fingers to worn in fingers that don't need worrying about takes me about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks, depending on string type and assuming you don't blister-up
Acoustic 408 coming to a stage near you soon
