"go to" stick
I know a lot of you ugs have more than one bass
like me
my four main basses are:
Pastorius Tribute Jazz
Ric 4003
Gibson tbird
U.S. active deluxe Precision
of course all of these are great sticks and I'm in command of just about any sound an electric bass can make with this collection
but when I play out
I'm going to my Ric almost every time
our drummer loves the precision
our guitarist loves the tbird
we all love the jazz
but when I pick up a bass to play a gig, it's the Ric and I bring the tbird as a backup
it's probably because I played a Ric in the 1970s

and maybe I'm used to the sound
whatever the reason, the Ric has been my go to stick
any of you ugs have a particular go to stick?
For me, it's my Clement fretless.
I wouldn't have expected that in a million years.
I really got it just because I wanted a decent fretless to do some recording and just for fun.
A flat-strung fretless PJ for hard/classic rock beat out a jazz. It just makes the mix for our band sound just right.
I'm just staggered at how nice it is every time I pick it up. I find myself lost for adjectives to describe just how nice this bass feels and sounds. I've never played any instrument that felt and sounded so right.
I still use the Lakland for snappier material, but the Clement sees the bulk of my playing time.
The Squier fretless will likely be on the chopping block soon since I have no real use for it anymore.
PS - I have a possible deal in the works for another fretted bass.......a GW at that.
Well, it's changed for me. Usually my go to is my Stingray 5. It's just an all around great bass, but lately I'm going to my re-finished Squier with ALumitones...it just kicks ass for everything, I love that bass! So right now, it's the Nintender Precision Bass 64.
And hey NW, if you need a new home for that Squier Fretless...
Oh, also, tone wise the ATKs sound KILLER through these old Acoustic Amps I lug around now.
I got to push my 371 rig at a house party the other night while eatin' cheeseburgers.... man I love these amps...
Stingray 5 string fretless and 5 string Roscoe Beck. These days, they're getting about equal time.
OTOH, I've been doing a lot of writing lately and I've been sitting on my deck with my trusty Dean ABG.

I hope the burgers weren't burned.:o
I just traded my Deluxe Jazz because it wasnt getting enough use. Every time, on the stage and in the studio its been my Stingray all they way. So why keep the Jazz along?
I have several basses in rotation but my go to is my Tobias Growler 4. I always bring two sticks to every gig but the Tobias is always one of them. It's light, fast and very comfortable in my hands and with all of her knobs and switches, she's capable of producing almost any tone I could possibly need.
Great thread BTW!!!!
For awhile my '96 Natural Stingray was my main bass. Recently though I have been going to my new Natural Stingray, or the 2004 Vintage burst
Black TB P-bass with Kent Armstrong soapbar pickup.

Well as you all know I've been through a lot of basses in the last couple months and I'm almost settled in. I sold all my SRs and the SRX is leaving this weekend as well as my ATK. That pretty much brings me down to my Ibby AEB, my daughters mikro, and my 73 Ibby P copy. The P is where it's at. I pick up that bass every time. Frets are about gone and it's beat to hell but it's so warm and inviting, it feels like part of my arm. Great bass. My very first earthtonesbass bass is ready to be assembled and I hope it plays as well as my old P. I am replacing the ATK with a Schecter 004. You know Schecters version of the RickenJazz. They play good look good and sound good. I've wanted a jazz type bass that played like one and sounded like one but didn't particularly look like one. I'm hoping this fulfills the request.

Back home I've only got two basses. My Warwick Vampyre and my Dean ML. My Vampyre was my only bass for a long time. When I got the dean that became my main bass in Armchair Victim. I brought out the Warwick a couple of times because it hands drop tuning better than the Dean did. I'm planning on getting a Dean Razorback V and I figure it'll become my main metal bass for metal bands while I'll use the Warwick for lessons or if I play with a non-metal band.
I have 5 basses, 3 of which are cheapos. The 4th is my Epi Viola, which, while not expensive, sounds and feels great, and I would gig with it in the appropriate time... I play it at church a lot. But my GOTO sitck (about 95% of the time) is my Birdsong Cortobass... Handles anything, and sounds and feels like a dream...
If I'm just chillin' alone I usually go to my Victor Bailey acoustic. When my boy's show up for practice lately I've been reaching for the White Gurl but inevitably end up with my Thumb 5 N/T.
If I take out only one bass on an M*M*T* gig then it HAS to be the Thumb. If I'm sitting in on something else I take whatever I feel like playing that night.
I guess the Thumb is my go to bass. I love that girl!
Here she is.
EBMM Sterling Fretless HPiezo #1
EBMM Sterling HH #2
There are others, but when gigging, its great to be able to switch to a stick that has exactly the same weight, neck, and feel, but just with a different sound.

+1......... It's alway's nice keeping a back-up of the same model you're main bass is. Also, for when you have to deal with alternate tunning.

I think you need a 4 string Thumb NT to go with that 5 wire.........

That's what I've been sayin'...

I may happen to know someone who might be looking to part with one real soon...... If they happen to let it go, I bet it'll be at a good price or a straight up trade possibly.....

Suede, the Squier will go. I'll make you a good deal if you're interested.
I need a bit of room now as a new one is likely coming in.
Well as you can see I have a few to choose from and there are even some not pictured there....but I will always either grab my MM Stingray5 or Warwick Corvette ProLine....depending on wether or not I need a 5. Love both those basses....actually I love all of my basses just don't get to play them all every time.
Gotta love my sdgr 5er, play it on all my gigs, but for reliability my '84 Pbass is where it's at. Totally different style of playing for me though. The Basstar is a mere toy.
The Alembic is the one that jumps up and down waving its hand, yelling Me, Me ..... play me when I walk into the room :D. The tone, the neck, the everything else. I just can't seem to put it down long enough to get to know the others very well.

I so got dibs on that aerodyne p if you ever let it go.

I've got 2 goto sticks currently, '08' MIA Fender Jazz V and a '09' Carvin Icon IC5. I like the Jazz for it's awesome punch and passive sound and I like the active soapbars on the Carvin, it's got really nice tone. My band mates have been pleased with the tone of the IC5. As far as the Jazz goes, what can you say it's a plug in and play instrument that sounds great.;)
at home mostly the MK Dragonfly 5...

then my BTB1006 (in the middle)

and then my jazz clone:

hey!
is that the same black les paul custom, with the abolone block inlays< ?
that guitar looks as nice as your ric in the original pic.,....

yeah, same guy, same les paul
some things never change :D
my ric is different though
the one in the 70s pic is a 4001
my new one is a 4003
My go-to is, naturally, a Precision.
I own 2 of 'em. The '70 and the '07.
OFC, I'd set that Riccy down and grab that P Deluxe like a 13-y.o. boy grabbin' his.....
well, you know, thing. haha (I have a 13-y.o. son, so I know of what I speak.)
All great axes ya got there, mister.
Carry on....

any pics of your pair of precisions?
my precision has a lot of admirers (including slade)
I've played it plenty

and our drummer loves it too
and its a giant sounding stick
and with the solid maple satin neck (no cutout for the truss in back) it plays like my hand was made for it
but the unplugging between sets to save the batteries always throws me and I miss the first three notes of the first siong of the next set just about every time
the ric is passive, so's the bird and I can leave them plugged in
those are what I use more than any
but I love the precision

Wow!!! Those toms your drummer uses are huge.......
If I had a Ric it would probably be my goto Stik. Haven't got to play one but I love the sound Geedy, Squeir and Burton got out of theirs.
And I know they gotta play nice.
OFC, here's the 2 P's. The '07 on the left and the $80 yardsale '70 on the right.

I really need to snap some more pics.

OFC I've seen you post about disconnecting between sets before and I gotta tell you, that ten or fifteen minutes that it sits there without being played while plugged in has so little impact on battery life. You're adding headache that is unnecessary. I went out to my music room this morning and found that I'd inadvertantly left my bass plugged in since Thursday. Fired up my amp and it was solid and loud. Quit unplugging between sets! :D

I'll give it a try
but I'll have my ric ready jic :D

I use my SRs most often when I'm playing my music, specifically my 6-String because it is just much more flexible between all the groups I play in.
But my really jammin' go to axe has to be either of my ATKs. They both sound the same, but have a different feel to it. The ATK-300 is more comfortable on the neck I think, but the ATK-700 has better action... so it's a toss up usually between the looks. The aged-white look on my 300 just fits in more than my 700 I guess, so I usually find my self picking that one up mroe often. But the E-String exploded on me a few weeks ago, so I need to pick up a new set...
I have a 5 string ATK on its way, and Im pretty sure that will be taking top spot on my go to list.
Acoustic 408 coming to a stage near you soon
