What songs are you learning?
Just a random post hoping to stir some some conversation.
What songs are you all working right now? whether for cover material or fun...
Myself
Cowboys from Hell - Pantera
Hanger 18 - Megadeth
Rosettastoned - Tool
These are to jam with one of my friend's kids. He's 14 I believe and getting pretty good.
Great composition!!
Would certainly push me to the limit to get that one down!!
Currently I'm re-visiting Ben Harper's Steal My Kisses
I've played it for years(read: I've played it and faked the bass solo at the end), but now I'm choppin' it down and feeling confident.
Transcribing Tony Grey Stuffis...

I think I hate you very much. :D
I sincerely admire people that can play on that level. I sincerely admire people that can transcribe on that level.
That's what a solid musical education will do for you.
You know what, though? After BassPanter reminded me about Cowboys From Hell, I went and learned that. Not note for note but close enough for fun.
I enjoyed it.
Got my Ya Ya's out!!

Have you heard this version? Juan Nelson...
wow!!
That is completely mad!!
Thanks FM!!
Its a thread hijack but I dare ya to learn this:

It's not a hijack if you're learning it.
Nelson gets a lot more freedom live. I saw Ben Harper on a PBS (Public Broadcasting System) special once. Juan Nelson simply ruled. He was the Man.
I have the Diamonds on the Inside cd. It is very good. But it's nothing compared to cutting Juan Nelson loose.
Me digs...

Well, learning/transcribing are one thing and playing is very different...
:p
I try though. Some of the stuff he does is really whacky and out of my league (for now, s'why Im learning his stuff...)... mostly the reallyreallyreally fast parts. I can figure them out and put them on paper but playing them at speed is a lil' hard...
Getting better though, which is what practice is for. The other day at practice had to write down a bass part for my pianist and... it took a lot longer than it should have. so, why Im working on my transcribing. Plus it's GREAT ear exercise...
Learning: Fugue in D Minor by bach: Almost down to make a vid of me playing it
Billie's Bounce by Charlie Parker(the Sax part)
next on my list: Donna Lee by Charlie Parker (Sax part)
Highland Wedding and Point/Counterpoint by Steve Morse. One of my best friends is a great guitar player and he wants to start playing bars, so we're learning these songs, some Dire Straits, Jazz standards... But for now, just those :P
Other than that, some original songs with some other friends - Much simpler, but good fun non the less.
As of now:
Tune 88: Jeff Lorber Fusion
The Preacher: Horace silver
Bach Cello suite in G major (Prelude): Perfecting the back end of it
A few more undetermined tunes for my forthcoming ensemble class.
Lately, I've been working on Jessica (Allmans), but on guitar.
I just like that tune and thought it would be fun to play, which it is.
Nothing really new on bass though. Mostly working on grooves and rhythm.
The band fell apart, again, and so there are no new demands in that area.
I'll likely find a new band and have to learn some material then.
you guys make me feel like an amateur :D:p

Man, that is one of my favorite songs ever. I want that played at my funeral. Seriously. That song, especially the studio version, just speaks to me.

I hear you! Bach? Charlie Parker? Way out of my league. :(

Unfortunately going to school for music does have its disadvantages, I'm much more at home thumping root notes and funking.
It's taking me out of my comfort zone and I am falling behind compared to the jazzer uglies but its cool.
Nothing is out of your league until you give it a shot.

I'm planning on going to music school next summer. I'm looking forward to being taken out of my comfort zone actually.

for classical music on electric bass: http://www.bassbooks.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=469 has the MIDI files, comes with notation and Tablature, which I admit I use but I re-arrange it since its for the 4-string bass, and I play a 6-string
for charlie parker I have this:
http://www.bassbooks.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=926&bc=no
mine says Copyright 1978 or so and is falling apart. got it for 7 dollars. No Tab. I actually put it into a Guitar Pro MIDI file note by note ( no tab there as well) so I can pick certain parts of the song, and slow it down so I can work on the speed ( billies bounce is at 165 BPM and there are 2 measures of a 16th note run with a 16 note triplet in it..ow)
I am planning on going to a music school in August and learn upright bass for a year before I audition for Berklee.
Add learning double bass to that list
A couple of other standards as well.
Plate getting full :S
Blah, I've been slowly workin at getting my Upright chops back... it's a cruel mistress.
Decided it's high time I start practicing Horn again too...
Addin some Weather Report to my quartets repetoire, so learned the parts to Birdland and Palladium from Heavy Weather today. Also decided to start working on Havona again, even though it's really tough... more of a pet project than anything else.
Been trying to write out the melody to Barbary Coast today, but my ear is really off this week.

Yeah, yeah. You guys think you're so great. Well, try this on for size!

It only took me a couple weeks to get tight. I can send you the tab if you think you can handle it.
;):D
j/k
Since I got my Rickenbacker, I've been playing Beatles tunes.
Specifically Something
One of the most beautiful songs of all time IMO! And Macca sure knows how to write a killer melodic bassline.

...Turbo Lover is my jam tune for when I want to feel like I'm going really really really fast.

Suddenly I'm feeling decidedly inadequate
Suddenly I'm feeling decidedly inadequate
I've been feeling that way since I started this damn thread :p
OK I can't lie - I was finding songs like Jaco's Continuum too easy and I was getting bored, so I cut off three fingers on each hand, removed the A string and played left handed.
Now I'm feeling only slightly pushed to get it note perfect.

Pssshhh..
Lightweight.
Fenderman, I am about to get severely enthalled in my favorite home boyz band of all time, THC....The Texas Hippy Coalition...:)
Pissed off and mad about it will be my anthem this year! I am in remission and getting so blissfully UGLY...:D:D
I've recently found myself with a lot of free time on my hands so I've decided to do something useful like ... oh, I dunno ...... get my sticks out of their cases again?!?!?! I have a CD by a Boston based blues player by the name of Albert Cummings called Workingman's Blues. It has some killer lines that just scream to be learned. So here I go.
Great to see you back, Thorn. Things have been way too quiet around here without you. :D
I've not been playing much, what with the move and all (more about this in another thread), but I've been working on Funk #49, a couple things by Norma Jean (a metal band, for those that haven't heard them) and trying to re-learn Anesthesia...always a good time there.
Finally got a chance today to get all 4 of us together to run Palladium and Birdland.
It went... better than expected, haha! Knowing my parts really helped keep it together, plus being the de facto leader I didn't have to worry so much about my parts as I did about getting everyone else together.
Not having an aux percussionist, and being limited in terms of keyboard timbres (don't have Zawinuls arsenal...), I usually have to do on the spot arranging and concession deciding since there's 'just' the 4 of us.
But it's turning out well... if I can get those jerks to practice more im hoping to get them down on 'tape', as it were.
joined a Southern Rock cover band, so Add:
Freebird, Mustang Sally, Mary Had a little Lamb, On The Hunt, Every rose as its Thorns, Honky Tonk Woman, Gimme 3 steps, and a lot more that is driving me insane ( easy parts more or less)
Also Add Donna Lee by CHARLIE PARKER on the list. None o this Jaco stuff! :D
Also picked up an upright bass and a french bow yesterday, so more stuff to add to the list to learn!

Recently learned this one. Sounds pretty easy, don't it. Give it a shot. edit (on fretless!)
I thought all the modulations, accidentals, and flat keys were gonna kill me.

Getting it tight with the choir and the rest of the band was a challenge but, man, when you get it done, you know you've done something.
B.A.S.K Assault Squad Leader UOF Badge #12 If you ask me to just play root notes again, I'm going to take that guitar off you and shove it down your throat! Don't play what's there, play what's not there. - Miles Davis THORNATUDE shall rule! - Thorn
