What are you listening to lately?
O.K. I guess this is the right section of the forum for this. What new tunes are you digging at the moment?
I lost my internet access in the storm here on the east cost a week and a half ago and it took over a week to get it back. So in the meantime I took to going to our public library for free WiFi access to take care of some online stuff. While there I happened accross the CD loaner shelf and their new music section. Picked up the debut album of this band out of Mississippi called Hill Country Revue. Great stuff.
Hard driving, southern blues rock. Kind of a cross between Skynyrd, old ZZ Top with a little bit of Allman Bros. thrown in the mix.
They were formerly a regional 3 piece band with a decent following in the southern states from what I understand playing allot of shows; known as the Mississipi Allstars....and did some opening acts for the Black Crowes; lead guitar player left to take the gig of lead guitar for that same act. Remaining two guys formed the Hill Country Revue. The ugly with this group is Chris Chew. I dig their rhthems and hard grinding blues. I wish they'd let Chris' bass come through the mix a little stronger though. Its heavily a guitar driven sound.
Well, I still like guitar, and they are worth checking out.
What new music has anyone else found that they'd like to share?
Jeff
Iron Maiden and Lynyrd Skynyrd at work...... Random on the iPod or to a couple local bands in the car
Pantera while working out today
I'm like Jackie (except for the metal stuff
) in that I usually just plug in the iPod on shuffle. CDs in the car at the moment would be Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentemen, Albert Cummings (Working Man's Blues), Weather Report (Black Market and Heavy Weather), The Best of War ... and More, Marcus Miller (Silver Rain), and Shelby Lynn (Identity Crisis). There are more than that out there but it's just too damn cold to go out and look right now (c;
Well, new is bit of a relative term for me as I have a lot of catching up to do and like such a wide variety of stuff.
Been really diggin' Gov't Mule and Jeff Beck lately though.
Both have (are) great guitarists that really seem to understand the importance of bass and give it due space in the music.
Derek Trucks has really caught my attention too.
I love metal Bare, but I also love my groove stuff....I have a wide range of loves in music, but to play, it usually needs to be super soulful, or metal...Hard/classic is good, as long as someone does something other than freebird!
Pantera is a STAPLE of our house...It's either played possibly each day a little while, or it's on my MP3 in my ear and tons of it on there...
Hey NWB, Derek is great! I love his wife, Susan Tedeshi...She is awesome! I have seen some of the concert footage of them playing together as well..Awesome stuff!
I even have some favorite country music, but I rarely listen to it...(don't tell on me, it blows my image...
I am still in my stage of loving TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION...They JAMMMMM
I live on a tour bus... Come straight out of Texas... You don't really wanna (expletive deleted) with us... Texas Hippie Coalition is on my heavy rotation. Great workout music.
Also really diggin' Tal Wilkenfeld Transformation.
I know. From one extreme to the other but, hey, good music is good music, y'all.
It seems your extremely different tastes are pretty darn similar to mine.
I'll go from listening to Victor Wooten to Rancid to the Allman's.
Oh yeah, I love the new
smiley! I immediately thought of you on that one!
FM, I just read the webpage a couple of days ago and found out they are in the studio recording a new one to be out soon...Also they are playing March 6th in Houston at ScoutBar, and we wanna go and hang with Randy. We will snap some pics if we get to go!
Someone on my Facebook page posted a youtube video of a tune I have loved for years and forgot about, KING'S X.........I hadn't seen that video in years and the tune was Black Flag...Great tune! I never noticed back then cause I wasn't ugly yet, but Doug Pinnick, the ugly not only was sportin a Hamer, but he's a lefty!
Other stuff I've had on heavy rotation is/are:
Bebo Norman, Enter The Haggis, and Robin Trower. Also recently dug out some of my old Grateful Dead stuff on vinyl and have been focusing more on Phil's rather meliodic bass runs. As a reformed Twanger I always was focused on Bob & Jerry's interplay.
Most of the music we play at church is pretty lame and I don't care to listen to it when I turn on the stereo. Bebo is different however. He's one of the few christian artists that really have a good sense of musicality.
Enter the Haggis is a celtic influenced rock group out of Tornto that the wife and I try to go and see when they are in the area. This spring we are taking a week's vacation and travelling to Ireland on a vacation with the band.
They have some good stuff without overdoing the whole celtic thing.

I'll have to check out the Texas Hipipe Coalition. With two reccomendations, they must be on to something!
later,
jeff
Lately it's been Soul Asylum and Confederate Railroad.
Unless I'm driving somewhere.... then I'm stuck listening to the sounds of my Chevy falling apart (literally
)
The Volbeat
Hmmm... I love these threads. Currently I'm loving:
Ben Harper and Relentless 7 - White Lies for Dark Times could very well be the best album to be released in the last decade! Amazing!
Davey Knowles and Back Door Slam - Coming up for Air this sh!t is on fire too!
Back Door Slam (before he put himself as top billing) - Roll Away I like this one better than the new one but they are both slammin'
Cross Canadian Ragweed - Any of their stuff is great
80 proof - Awesome Red Dirt Band
40 Mile Road - Awesome Red Dirt Band
Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way to Blue their replacement for Layne is spot on. Greatest comeback in the last couple years
This killer local band called Love Dog! Their CD La Mala Muchacha is smokin' check 'em out www.myspace.com/lovedogmusicrocks
I could go on but if this doesn't get you in the mood to party it's time to pack it up!
H
Hey folks, newbie here.
Listening to the some Otep, Live365.com and Slacker Radio. Really fairly bored with music these days. Favorite band is TOOL so I just patiently between albums and keep myself amused.
I migrated from TalkBass.
welcome aboard brazel.....
i'll add my new birthday CD, Them Crooked Vultures to my spinning list.... so far so awesome
Well I have been listening to a lot of Lamb of God lately along with Pantera.
But I have recently discovered something new to me, Richard Cheese & Lounge Against The Machine. This stuff is awesome. Check it out if you have not already.
Changed up my tempo with things today and looked into some old KC and the Sunshine band, Dazz, Isley Brothers, etc...Looking for a tune to metal up that would sound righteous...We are writing so it was like taking a good break and deciding where to go from here!
Anyone have any suggestions? I don't care much for re=makes, but whenever Rob Zombie re-did Boogie Man and hardened it up a little, it got me thinking!..

I can think of a bunch.
Try the O'Jays' For the Love of Money. You could probably do Backstabbers but the lyrics are a little cheesy.
Hey Brazel, welcome; stick around awhile; things are a bit more laidback than on TB.
Here's my latest: I got in to worke this morning and a co-worker had left me a care package, 6 freshly burned CD's on my desk. How's this for some musical variety:
- James Brown, 20 hits (1991)
- KD Lang, Ingenve
- T.Rex, Electric Warrior
- The Ventures, Best of (1964)
- Dixie Chicks, Home
- Tower of Power from 1973
(with Francis Rocco Prestia on bass)
I havent listened to any of it yet. My Marantz SR-18 had one of its power stages take a dump and hasnt come back from service yet.....I'm ripping the discs off onto MP3 and loading onto the Ipod tonight.
Anyone ever heard of Francis Prestia ?
Holy crap tell me you are kidding! Rocco is one of the most wicked 16th note players ever! I know you've heard what is Hip? If not that is the first cd you should listen to!
H
Yeah, I just looked him up on wikipedia. think I'll pull the james brown disc out listen to the Tower of Power disc. I can only deal with about 10 min of brown's voice and I DEFINITLY need a change of venue.
Hey, Jeff, check out Rocco Prestia's solo cd called Everybody on the Bus.
FM - Thanks, for the suggestion.
Problem with being a reformed twanger is that I have 20+ years of focusing on the guitar in music, and following guitarits. Bass is something new for me wihin the past 2-3 years.
Growing up my favorites were Al DiMeola, Robert Fripp, John McLaughlin, Frank Zappa, Jerry Garcia & Bob Wier, Jeff Beck, Frank Marino, etc. etc.
Now my drummer throws names of great bass players at me and I'm clueless. It took me a solid year to train my ear to focus on the bass lines when I listen to music....
Rocco is impressive, I may have to hunt this album down.
Jeff
Old stuff I've been really diggin lately:
The Beatles
Pearl Jam
Foo Fighters
New stuff I LOVE:
myspace.com/we_thebranches
myspace.com/thoughshewrote
myspace.com/thisfiresembrace
and many more I can't really remember here at work.
Have them all on the home PC.
If any of you are east coasters, you may have heard of them. They have a folk/southern rock/funk sound that's hard to explain but they have some great tunes. I see them whenever they come into town, and they build a lot of their songs around sweet basslines. Check them out on myspace or something if that's your cup o' tea.
Right now I'm listening to Dr. Dog. They've got a Beach Boys/The Band/The Beatles feel. Their new record is streaming right now for free...so, everyone check it out!

So good!
A young scotsman with awesome style..
I just got a new band/album from my brother.
Plankton - from Sweden.
All instrumental.
Complete, total, awesomeness!
I haven't heard anything this good in ages.
David Rodigan, and other sound clash selecta's recordings.
Well, its new for me at least. last week i heard this on the radio, its a new release from a Band I never heard of before: CAKE So when the storm hit us hard on the east cost, after cleaning out the driveway of 25 inches of white misery; I poked at youtube for a while.

Hope everyone got through the storm o.k. Some areas got much worse than others.
Jeff
Cake rocks. If you've never heard them, check this out. Bass line rules!

yeah, it was the bass line on Sick Of You that I heard on the radio that made me take notice. Its front & center in the mix, but he dosent overplay it.
Lately, it's been Brian Bromberg and Stanley Clarke along with the ever-present heapings of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones.
I've been listening to iron maiden since i saw them live in melbourne
also i've been listening to a lot of apocalyptica and thy art is murder

I am still in my stage of loving TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION...They JAMMMMM...I can listen to them all day and not get tired of it...I normally do get tired of stuff really quick, but this is some of that heyday, back in the day, good groovin, sexy metal! I dig it...

Little warning with it though..If harsh language and long hair, texas red clay, and me get on your nerves, you won't like them..
