Experiment...
Just got a few sets of beautiful Pyramid flatwounds for real cheap...
So I'm gonna take my friend Joe's advice (http://www.joecreighton.com) and stick 'em on my fretted and fretless MM Sterlings.
If I can make 'em sound half as good as he does, I'll be happy
...but they'll be on tonight.
After a couple of days I'll report.
OK so the Pyramid flats have been on for a few days now, settled in and tested.
Gauges:
.040
.055
.075
.105
Chrome Nickel Flatwound
String tension - seemed a lot tighter that my round/ground sets have been.
Meant I could play faster/tighter at the neck
Attack: surprisingly good 'thunk', particularly with the EBMM Sterling HH set on 4th (one before the bridge end) position
Sustain: As predicted, not as much sustain as a roundwound, but great on harmonics.
Volume: Louder than I'd expected, and very even balance across all strings
Playability: AWESOME!!! so cool, smooth and light. I may even have my signature sound!!! AHAHA
Overall verdict: I love 'em on the fretted Musicman, and am going to set em up on the fretless soon.
