The Hendrix Experience
I just saw a special on Hendrix and he was a legendary twanger but I was thinking what my favorite Hendrix song was and it's Fire but not because of Hendrix but because of the bass playing of Noel Redding. Though it is our lot in life I was thinking of how many more great Uglies are completely overshadowed by a great twanger or screamer.
i liked redding and billy cox too. he always had a great rhythm section.
I always dug Billy Cox,more funky me thinks
A friend of mine burned me about 22 cd's of Hendrix stuff including lost performances and bootlegs...I have actually listened to them all and can say even the shotty stuff sounds good! THere are a couple of them where the basslines are supremely heavy and very good on some old blues re-makes, sort of like a studio jam....Good stuff! However, I have no way of knowing which ugly was on the studio mixes
Thorn, according to which tracks you're listening to, you're likely hearing Billy Cox or Bob Babbitt (of Motown fame). There was one more major bassist on at least one of the posthumous releases but I can't think of his name.
Me, I love Billy Cox and Bob Babbitt. Never much of a Redding fan.
But back on topic, I think Mars Cowling got overshadowed by Pat Travers.
Bob Daisley was not only overshadowed by Ozzie Osborne and Randy Rhodes but actually removed from the remastered cds. Don't get me started...

Noel was actually a twanger who tried out for bass and got the job
He did a great job too
Played during Jimi's most creative days
He's not given a lot of props because in the opinion of many Jimi's second bassist Bill Cox was technically better on the instrument
but Noel stood hiis ground very well
