Genz-Benz Shuttle 6.0 the only way to go !!!
Well – an update is in order – I haven’t been active on the boards here for a while. Just busy playin’.
Got into a new band with old friends – What’s in the Box? (whatsinthebox.me) in April/May and have been gigin’ a bunch… a great Stinky and accomplished Twanger (who does NOT like to hear his guitar too loud – get that?!) and we brought back the old Ugly to play Rhythm and Sing a bit - he has that “Front Man” ability to talk to the crowd and get them laughing and up and dancing - we play a mix of Blues, Rock, and Funk as well as some old tunes – (classic rock as a label sux).
But the main reason I’m posting is to tell EVERYONE to buy a Genz-Benz Shuttle (at least a 6.0 which is 300 watts into 8 ohms and 600 into 4 wow!) I got one for $450 used (what a worthwhile purchase - it’s $699 new) . Before that I was playing a Demeter HBP-1 H Series preamp thru a Carvin power amp. The darn head racked (6u) weight 70 pounds with power/light strip and a BBE Max Com. The best tone I could afford. Well – I’m getting older and the rack is not getting any lighter so I researched and then bought a shuttle 6.0 after a recommendation from another Ugly in the area.
--- IN-CRAY-AB-LAY --- the tone is so fine –and clean if you want plus it has a tube in it that you can overload for some grit. THREE POINT SEVENTY FIVE POUNDS total – I just bought some Velcro to stop the head from moving around while I play. I am so impressed with it I going to sell ALL my amps because there is NO NEED for any other amp. – I thought that the rig I had was the tone I was looking for – this is better and so small I can wear it around my neck and look like Flav-a-Flav – lol.
Seriously the amp is amazing – you can look up the specs at their site. But now that the Class D amps have come around all the other heavier amps will plummet in price. So I need to take pix of my old rig and post them here, eBay and Craig’s’ list. Man this unit is so nice –
Note: I play a Fender Jazz V (Victor Bailey) and have the amp powering a 2X12 (8 ohm) Avatar cab with Selenium speakers. Sweeeeet Lois!

Couldn't agree more!
Based upon NWBasser's recommend I checked one out and ended up buying a new one. I've used it for several gigs, two different bands and even as a power amp for solo acoustic stuff.
Pro's:
- It NEVER gets hot. And it's been pretty warm in these parts lately...the original band's space is small and HOT. The amp never gets hot though. Pretty crazy. I can play it for an entire cover band gig, and it's still not hot after 4 hours of playing.
- Light weight and small. It fits in my bass' gig bag. All I have to bring to a gig is my gig bag, pedal board and cab. No head to lug around because it's already there.
- More than powerful enough. We play at a bar that only amplifies vocals...and still have yet to turn it up past 11 o'clock. I run it into an Ampeg 4x10.
- Tube Pre-amp. I keep the tube preamp gain at 5 o'clock...almost dimed. The little red overdrive light lights whenever I play, and I like that little bit of grit. It also takes pedals well...I've been running an EH English Muff'n up front and man...instant stank grit tone.
- Flexible. I also use it for solo acoustic gigs. I just run a small mixer into the effects return, and voila...a very powerful clean power amp.
- The D.I. sounds AMAZING. One of the bars we play uses the D.I.. A buddy of mine played a song at our last gig, and from the dance floor the D.I. sounded phenomenal. Very close to what I hear from my cab. I love that it lets you send the post pre-amp and tone shaping signal.
- The EQ is way more than I need. I leave all the dials at noon. But even small tweaks in the eq section mean bigg differences in tone. The tone shaping buttons are cool for quick changes. But I don't use those either. Just the straight up flat tone from this amp is killer.
- The mute button rocks.
It's true I have only been playing Bass consistently for about 9 months now. But I played the twang stick for 19 years, and I know tone. This amp, while not cheap, has been a no brainer since I got it. I tried to sue a Fender Tube amp to get me that tube overdrive, but the English Muff'n into the Genz Benz does the trick.
Thanks for the thread, and thanks to NW Basser for the recommend.

Well, the class d will gain a share of the market.
A lot of old schoolers out there that want something different.
There's no substitute for a quality rig no matter what the brand.
Glad to see you're still stopping by.
Got some pics of this rig?
I'm still lovin' the sound of my Shuttle!
And yes, the DI totally rocks! I use it to record and get a killer tone every time.
You'd think, something so small and light couldn't sound so good, but this one kills!
great reviews guys.... I rocked a 4 X 10 GB cab for like 11 years- no one had ever even heard of them back then it seemed. I'm interested now.
for a new head should give the Genz Shuttle series a good audition at least. Regarding price, I think my Shuttle was quite cheap for all that it offers. The Shuttles seem to have some of the best engineering for the light Class D amps. A look under the hood shows some very high-quality components and workmanship inside.
Man, I want a 6.0 so bad I can taste it. Incredibly nice amps. Congrats on your score, sir.
Congrats on your new band, too. I'll have to give it a listen.
