For all the METAL uglies...
Finally a lesson book for Metal bass players. Alex Webster is a beast. I will be getting this as soon as it comes out.
This is a metal bass lesson book... And there's even a sequel:

Not a lot of theory in that one though, just dig right in.
Personally, I like to know what I'm doing, but there is something to be said for playing rapid 16ths within 20 pages.
I _will_ be checking out the book mentionned above too though - am a sucker for these things.
I don't count the Metallica book as instruction because all it's teaching you is how to play metallica lines. There isn't anything wrong with that if you're looking to play metallica covers.
Plus there hasn't been a book for Extreme/Death metal period so I'm very much looking forward to this one.
So... what exactly would be in this book that makes it special enough to buy?
Considering it's written by a bass legend of extreme metal I think it'll include a bunch of techniques and concepts that apply to extreme metal. Alex is well-known not only for his speed but his hand dexterity and tapping ability. Most books don't even address metal and when they do it's typically play a bunch of 16th notes.
Granted, the metallica book is very focussed on getting you playing met-tunes quickly, but... By what definition is that _not_ instructional? And you don't get much more Metal than Metallica. (Like 'em or hate 'em, beside the point. They are metal).
I love music theory as much as the next person, but actually playing songs is what it's all about.
Of course, if you just want to rave about your personal bass god publishing a book, that's fine too.
i agree with panther. a song book is NOT the same as an instructional book. there is no insight given, just tab/notation of the song.
besides, metallica quit being anyone's heavy metal influence a LONG time ago...... maybe since And Justice For All
>)
i'd certainly be interested if the book could give one ideas on how to play outside the box for heavy music.
To be fair, the metallica books ml is talking about were somewhat instructional. But they were instructional only to metallica tunes. I never said there was anything wrong with that. But there simply hasn't been a purely instructional book about the Metal genre, particularly extreme death-type metal that Cannibal Corpse plays. That is why I'm excited about this book because I think it will address techniques, theories and applications that other books just don't address.
ML - I agree that playing songs is where it's at, particularly when they are songs that my band and I have written together. There's nothing wrong with cover songs if that's what you want to do. But I want to do more than that. And I'm learning through my bass teacher just how knowing more about theory can really open up your bass playing. I'd rather be writing stuff like Orion than Enter Sandman (no offense to the later but Orion is far superior of a song.)
I don't know what to expect from this book or if it's truly going to be any different from any others but the fact that it's co-written by a legendary bass player in the metal world who's actually a pretty intelligent guy leads me to believe that there might be some great info in there that someone like me (and possibly others on this board) could use to take his bass playing to the next level.
I feel like I'm standing in-front of a firing squad talking about this book. If it doesn't interest you, that's fine. Just don't come pissing in my corn flakes when I'm excited about something and decide to post it on the boards. People have been complaining about a lack of new topics so I brought one to the table.
First off, let me assure you, I don't want to piss in your corn flakes anymore than you want them pissed in.
Sorry if I made that impression.
The Metallica books I mentionned don't just teach you Metallica songs, they teach you how to play bass - hence the title Learn to play bass.... They just depend heavily on Metallica music to teach. That's fine by me.
Playing cover songs is a great way to learn, and a good way to get some stuff under your fingers - I'd love to play my own stuff, but I haven't written anything yet.
Hey do you know about a Bass teaching book for stuff like death metal Just because that's what i'm aiming for and i'm not sure how to improve my bass playing
Did you not read the other parts of the post?
Just picked up G World's How to play Heavy Metal Bass DVD. It's not really about death metal but it does have some good tips for playing metal bass.
OH hell yeah!
