OMG I have too much range!
Why isn't 24 fret the standard? Do you ever hear anyone complaining that they have _too much_ range? Too many frets?
I guess we can blame leo for this. Why not 26 frets or more to give you the range of an upright.
The cool cats playing upright historically played on the lower third of the finger board.

Why, Jaco didn't need any at all.

And I can't say anything bad about Leo.....I just ordered a Stingray 5.
I'm not blaming Leo. He set a standard when he made the P bass.
Question, what kind of range did Jaco have on his fretless? probably not much more than 22 frets.
There's a 5 string signature bass out there with a high C that has 27 frets.
There's a practical reason why an upright is tuned in fourths. (Just look at your left hand or those sinister players your right hand). The ugly stick and the twang does not need to be tuned in fourths. I've seen arguments that it should be tuned in fifths.Besides that if you tune in fifths the twanger can't play your stick.
harmonics exist irregardless of fret placement or lack therof. you can play them over the p'ups also....just a matter of finding where they are. frets dont determine range. to me a fretless instrument is more versitile, not limited to half step increments. My upright lessons start next week (yeah, I still owe ya'll rental porn.....its coming)

Frets over 22 get in the way of my monster neck humbuckers.
two monster neck humbuckers would rock in a P configuration for a 6 string.........
I recently spoke to Blossom of theSquash Blossom Boys. She told me that one the bassists for the NMSO (New Mexico Symphony Orchestra) tuned his upright in fifths. Scrape the eggs off my face (conveniently placed to cover the eyes. )
tuning in 5ths, for upright, is not uncommon. It's definitely not common, but it is not uncommon...
With normal meathooks, paws etc, you have about a step and half range on an upright. Playing fifths becomes duck soup, put playing minor minor thirds, ouch!!
What do those people do with hands that large palm bowling balls for practice?
we can use bass mondolin music and tabs.

Ah,just tradition, I reckon.
24 fret would be more useful, though, wouldn't it?
